Seventeenth Annual

Contest for Writers Living in Kansas

$900 In Prizes

Prizes: Adult Division: $275 best poem, $275 best short story
Youth Division: $75 best poem, $75 best short story
Honorable Mentions: $200 total

Deadline: Postmarked by March 15, 2006

Eligibility: Entrants must live in Kansas. There is no requirement for subject matter. Writers competing in the Youth Division must be under 18 or currently enrolled in high school.

Entries: Unpublished poetry or short story competition. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but writers must notify us immediately if an entry has been accepted elsewhere. No single entry may be longer than 20 pages. All entrants will be notified of the contest winners.

Judging: Entries will be judged entirely on literary merit. Past judges have been Gar Bethel, Troy Boucher, Denise Low, Janet Peery, Stephen Trapscott, Natalie L. Winners: Winners will be notified by April 7, 2006 and will be honored and invited to read at a special presentation. The reading will be held at Winfield Chamber Office  in Winfield, during Kanza Days, April 29, 2006 Winning entries may be published by the Kansas Voices contest, however, writers retain all rights.

Manuscripts: Manuscripts will not be returned. Do not send your only copy. Type entries on one side only of 8½ x 11 inch white paper. Poems may be single spaced, but prose must be double-spaced and at least 12 pt. Clear photocopies are acceptable. A copy of the completed entry form must accompany the entries. Titles of all works entered must be listed on the entry form. The writer's name must not appear on the manuscripts.

Entry Fee: $3 for each poem or prose submission. Authors may enter as many times as they wish in either category. A $20 fee will be charged for all checks returned NSF.

Art Information for Art in the Park                                                            

Entry Fee:
There is a $50.00 fee (one exhibitor per space — no half spaces) which is non-refundable. Exhibit space will be
approximately 12' x 12'. Pre-assigned booth spaces will be given to exhibitors as they enter the park. Exhibitors should set up between 5:30 and 9:00 am and be responsible for their own set-ups, screens and canopies. Artists are expected to stay until 5 pm. Outdoor show; come prepared for all types of weather. The Art in the Park Festival does not retain a percentage of your sales. Entries received by July 14, 2006 may be used in advertising for our purchase awards.

Requirements:
Artists who have not exhibited with us for the last 3 years MUST submit 3-5 photographs or slides, which are representative of all current works to be shown at the festival. These photographs or slides will be reviewed by a screening committee and will not be returned. Detailed description of work to be displayed must be on the entry form.

Acceptable Work:
Original fine arts including painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, photography, sculpture, pottery, pottery, and glass will be considered for judging. All works since 2001 and not previously awarded a prize at Winfield Art in the Park will be judged. Categories above must have at least three pieces exhibited in that medium and all works judged must be for sale. Drawings, prints, and paintings must be framed or matted. Original fine crafts including weaving, jewelry, works in wood, folk art, fiber art, etc. will be considered for judging.  No molds, kits, patterns, or commercially produced items or consignment items are allowed. We will ask exhibitors to remove these if they appear the day of the festival.

Awards:
Merit awards for fine arts in the above categories will be selected by a judge. They will total $1,200 and include a $275 Best of Show and a $175 award for Best Original Craft. The criteria for judging all awards will be at the discretion of the judge. Official judging begins at 10 am.

Purchase awards are prepaid commitments by local individuals and businesses totaling approximately $7,000 which will be spent throughout the day of the festival. Ribbons of purchase are given. Remember, only purchase award patrons will be invited to make their selections from 9-10am, before the festival is opened to the public.

Liability:
The Winfield Arts and Humanities Council and Winfield Art in the Park Board Members are not responsible for personal injury and loss or damage to work displayed. Artists should insure their own work.
